You cannot be healthy and smoke. Smoking is one of the greatest anti-longevity principles. No matter what it takes, if you are serious about living a long and healthy life - STOP SMOKING!

5% of the population carry the gene for alcoholism. If you carry the gene, you can't drink. How do you know if you have the gene? You don't need to ask me - you know!

If you are in the 95% who does not carry the alcohol gene, enjoying up to 250mls per day of wine (especially red), may afford you a reasonable health benefit. Mind you, you markedly reduce this benefit by taking this wine with a poor diet.

Coffee has been given a bad press over the years. The last ten years has seen an explosion of high quality coffee outlets with a reduction in the consumption of instant coffee. The evidence is clear, instant coffee is no good for your health, but the other stuff has a growing list of health benefits.

SLEEP

Hardly a vice, but an essential part of our life. Too much or too little may have profound effects on your longevity. Chronic sleep deprivation has been linked to numerous medical problems such as hypertension, obesity and numerous neuro-cognitive problems such as depression, memory disturbances and difficulty concentrating. The suggested ideal sleeping time is somewhere between 6-8 hours.
