Longevity Series from Dr Ross Walker

"It's your genetics that loads the gun and your environment that pulls the trigger". One of the most straightforward longevity principles is to select the right relatives.

If you have a family history of longevity, that is a great place to start on your quest for a long and healthy life. Unfortunately some people with this family history then have the mistaken belief that they are bullet proof and at times play Russian roulette with their lives.

Location, Location, Location:

Not only does it seem wise to pick the right relatives but also to pick where you live. The world champions of longevity are the Okinawans from Japan.

This small island has the highest proportion of centenarians than any other region of the world. Interestingly, when a group of Okinawans moved to Brazil, their average longevity dropped by around seventeen years.

The Preventative Assessment:

The best treatment of all modern diseases is not to get them in the first place. Even if you have lousy genetics, early screening can detect the potential problem and in our modern medical world we now can offer you very effective preventative treatments.

From the colonoscopy to remove pre-malignant bowel polyps, mammography to detect early breast cancer through to sophisticated coronary CT scanning and arterial screening to detect vascular disease, most conditions can be prevented.

You Are What You Eat:

The only scientifically proven longevity principle is calorie restriction. Although I am not an advocate of the severe calorie restriction practised by a small, not so happy bunch of zealots, I strongly suggest you reduce your daily intake by eliminating unnecessary foods, cutting back on the size of your meals and replace those sugary based fluids (soft drinks, commercial fruit juices) with other fluids, especially water.

Good health,
